Gothia-Cup

The Vancouver Whitecaps Elite Girls team will compete in Sweden in July when they play in the prestigious 2013 Gothia Cup by SKF in Gothenburg.

The Vancouver Whitecaps Girls have played outstanding soccer this season, most recently winning the Metro Women’s Soccer League Cup.

In Sweden they will be playing in one of the world’s biggest youth soccer tournament at the Gothia Cup, which has been played since 1975.

“This is a once in a lifetime experience for our Girls Elite team,” said Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi to whitecapsfc.com. “This tournament provides an opportunity for the team to compete in an internationally recognized tournament, to showcase their skills in matches against other countries, and expand their knowledge of the game.”

The Vancouver Whitecaps Girls have had great success at youth tournaments this season, representing well at both the NCAA Final Four Showcase and the Las Vegas Players Showcase.

1,600 teams are expected from over 80 countries at the Gothia Cup.

It is expected that 4,000 matches will be played on over 100 fields.

Players will arrive on July 14, with opening ceremonies on the 15th being attended by 50,000 athletes and coaches.

The finals will be played on a new, temporary 14,000-seat arena. Final games will be played in 13 divisions between 26 teams on July 19 and 20.

The newly constructed arena will be completed before the beginning of the tournament and will be used during all six days of the competition.

Throughout the tournament 58 games will be played on the newly built stadium.

One of the founding owners of the Whitecaps, the late Wendy McDonald, made this opportunity possible for the Vancouver Whitecaps girls.

SKF donated a Canadian entry to the tournament to McDonald for her 90th birthday. Shortly before her passing in December, she gave the entry to the Vancouver Whitecaps Girls team.

“We are very appreciative of the kind generosity of Wendy McDonald. This is a gift the team will never forget,” said Lenarduzzi
