TSN becomes official broadcaster of all Whitecaps regular season, playoff games

By Cam Tucker, Metro Vancouver

A multi-year partnership extension between the Vancouver Whitecaps and telecommunications giant, Bell, means all of the Major League Soccer club’s games will be broadcast on TSN, beginning in 2014.

The Whitecaps made the announcement Wednesday morning.

According to last season’s television schedule found on the league’s website, TSN carried only eight Whitecaps games throughout the entire MLS regular season, while TSN 2 carried two Vancouver matches.

That sports network is now the official broadcaster of the Whitecaps, meaning it will carry all of the club’s MLS regular season and playoff games next season.

Amway Canadian Championship games will still be broadcast on Sportsnet, Metro has been told.

Bell will also carry its brand on all official men’s and women’s Whitecaps’ jerseys, according to a statement from the club.

“This is a great day for Whitecaps FC fans across the country,” said Rachel Lewis, the Whitecaps’ chief operating officer, in a statement.

“We are proud to call TSN … home and are excited to provide our fans with unprecedented access to Whitecaps FC coverage nationwide.”

Switching from the business side to player personnel, the Whitecaps selected midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy with the seventh pick in Round Two of Wednesday’s MLS Re-Entry Draft.

The 30-year-old Ballouchy has played in 185 MLS matches, beginning in 2006 with Real Salt Lake.

He was traded from the New York Red Bulls to the San Jose Earthquakes in July of 2012. He’s played in 11 matches with the Earthquakes since then, missing time in both seasons with an ACL injury.

The Whitecaps have seven days to make Ballouchy a contract offer to retain him for the upcoming 2014 season.
